Miriam ‘Mimi’ Planas, a lesbian mom & activist, announces candidacy for Miami-Dade County Commission

News release from the campaign of Miriam “Mimi’ Planas, a lesbian mother running for Miami-Dade Commission:

planasandson_605Miriam “Mimi” Planas, a current District 10 resident, announced her candidacy for Miami-Dade County’s District 10 Commission seat today. Planas declared before nearly 50 of her closest friends and family in the District. "The road ahead will be long and trite, but I am determined to prove my commitment to the people in this district." She added, "I hope that 2010 will be a year that will empower the people."

The young, Miami native, who is the executive assistant for the president of Dolphin Products asserted that, "To be a credible representative in this great district means safe streets, strong schools, affordable housing, and economic development that provides quality jobs at living wages and adequate health care." She remarked that progress in the District will only be realized when, "The government represents the people’s interests above all else.” Planas indicates that her campaign will seek to inspire a public conversation on critical local issues that residents feel need more attention.

Planas, who has announced her candidacy for the Commission seat currently held by Sen. Javier Souto, looks forward to the challenges and hurdles of the campaign. As a full-time working parent and caretaker, Planas looks forward to meeting with residents and business owners in the coming months.

Planas, 41, is a native Miamian and a 1985 graduate of Coral Park Senior High School. She received her Associates Degree from Miami Dade College in 1999. She has an extensive record of community involvement and helps persons struggling with addiction and recovery.

"My personal and professional experience along with my tenure in this community has taught me that we have so much to be proud of in this District. I intend for my campaign to be as much a celebration of our accomplishments as well as a serious conversation about the issues that affect us on a daily basis.”
