This is what winning looks like!
Thank you for standing with us on this journey to win marriage equality! Two years ago, when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), we said that we were not content to wait for the Supreme Court to one day bring marriage equality to our state. We vowed to fight to overturn the state’s marriage ban ourselves. And on January 22, 2014, with you by our side, we filed the first lawsuit aimed at striking Florida's ban on marriage for same-sex couples from our state constitution. On January 5 of this year, after a string of five state and federal court victories, Miami-Dade Judge Sarah Zabel lifted the stay in Equality Florida Institute's case and we welcomed marriage to Florida! Our victory and the thousands of joyful weddings that followed played a crucial role in the national march toward marriage as we showed the U.S. Supreme Court, just a couple of months before the marriage hearings, that the South and country were ready for the freedom to marry. Thank you for making this journey possible. We hope you'll enjoy this short video commemorating the amazing day, June 26, when we celebrated the national victory for marriage equality all across the state. Onward! Special thanks to our incredible national legal partners: And to all legal teams and courageous plaintiffs who filed lawsuits and went to court to win the freedom to marry for us all.
