Meet the Interns: Buket Turkmen (Field Intern)
1. Tell us a little about yourself…
I am Buket Turkmen. I am 22 and I am a senior at University Of Tampa, I study Criminology and Criminal Justice. I am from Turkey and I have been living in Florida for about 3 years.
2. Why are you involved with LGBTQ activism?
I am originally from Turkey and it is not very easy to live there if you are a member of the LGBTQ community. It is both culturally and religiously not accepted so people’s views are very against it. In the last couple years, every time it was the time for Pride, government banned it. I believe that everyone has the right to live as they wish without being discriminated and judged. Being involved in the LGBTQ community means the world to me, as I am a member of it and many people around me.
3. Why did you want to intern at Equality Florida?
I wanted to intern at Equality Florida because I want everyone to have the same opportunity to live as they wish and I want to help the LGBTQ community in every way I can. This would give me an opportunity to help out the community
4. What are your plans after you graduate?
Actually my plans after graduating in would be to work as a criminologist and/or work in the crime scene investigations. But I would also continue to volunteer in organizations as Equality Florida.
