Equality Florida Stands Opposed to the Nomination of Judge Kavanaugh for U.S. Supreme Court

Tallahassee, FL -- Today Equality Florida joins leading national human rights organizations including Lambda Legal, the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the Equality Federation, and the Human Rights Campaign in standing in opposition to the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.

From Jon Harris Maurer, Equality Florida Public Policy Director:

By nominating Judge Brett Kavanaugh for the U.S. Supreme Court, President Trump continues his self-serving assault on civil rights, women’s rights, and LGBTQ rights. Judge Kavanaugh has argued for limiting restraint on presidential power and has opposed access to safe and legal abortion, opposed workers’ rights, and opposed consumer protection.  He has been and continues to be enthusiastically supported by the ferociously anti-LGBTQ Family Research Council. We demand a nominee who will ensure that the Supreme Court is a court for all Americans.

When it comes to the U.S. Supreme Court, the stakes are high for the LGBTQ community. The Court and this appointee will likely rule on whether businesses have a license to discriminate against the LGBTQ community, President Trump’s ban on transgender service members in the military, and a host of other issues critical to our community and our allies.  We deserve a fair nomination process that results in a Justice who will uphold the Constitution, our values, and our dignity.

Equality Florida is participating in a press conference with Reproductive rights advocates calling for the rejection of Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court on Thursday, July 12.

President Trump has promised to appoint only biased justices who will overturn Roe v. Wade and strike down the Affordable Care Act. Unless he affirmatively says he will uphold Roe, it can only be assumed that Kavanaugh will undo access to safe and legal abortion.

“Make no mistake, the right to access abortion safely and legally in this country is absolutely on the line,” said Missy Wesolowski, Statewide Director of Organizing with Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates. “Planned Parenthood and our allies are vigorously opposed to the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh for a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court,” she added.
