Across the country, we are seeing abortion access rolled back with extreme bans and restrictions. Restrictions and bans on abortion fall hardest on those already facing the most significant barriers to accessing care due to systemic racism and inequities, including people of color, those working to make ends meet, members of the LGBTQ community, immigrants, young people, those living in rural communities, and people with disabilities.

Abortion access in America is in crisis. In 2022, the Supreme Court overturned 50 years of precedent by reversing the landmark decision in Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, two foundational rulings that affirmed our Constitutional right to abortion and privacy. This dangerous ruling is an assault on the privacy, self-determination, dignity, and equality of every person in our country. By allowing abortion to become once again a "states' rights" issue, the ruling opens the floodgates for states to outlaw abortion. This ruling is about who has power over us, who has the authority to make decisions for us, and who can control our future. All of our rights are on the line. We are in this fight to make sure everyone has the power to control their own bodies, lives, and futures. Building a more just and equitable society means ensuring abortion care is available and affordable for all. It’s essential that we protect the legal right to abortion, especially now. Abortion is health care. And health care is a human right. We can not go back, and we will not back down. We must stand shoulder to shoulder and fight these attacks together.

LGBTQ and abortion rights are causes in common — causes under siege from the same right-wing politicians who led the anti-LGBTQ backlash this past year while also pushing dangerous anti-abortion legislation. During the 2022 Legislative Session, Republicans passed one of the most extreme abortion bans in the country: A bill that outlaws nearly all abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, with no exceptions for rape, incest, or human trafficking. Any effort to ban abortion is forced pregnancy and an attack on our right to bodily autonomy. We know that reproductive freedom and LGBTQ rights share a foundation in ensuring freedom from governmental intrusion into our most intimate, personal decision-making.

What is the connection between reproductive justice and LGBTQ liberation? Dignity. Equality. Freedom. These values bind LGBT and abortion rights as causes in common. Read on to find out more.

Politicians should not be interfering with our most personal medical decisions. Abortion access should not be based on your ZIP code, income level, or immigration status. Abortion clinics and funds are open and ready to support patients in every state.
