Equality Florida's Statement on Amazon Relocation

Equality Florida's Statement on Amazon Relocation
Friday, February 2, 2018 -- A national campaign called “No Gay? No Way!” has launched. Its aim is to get Amazon to reject any bid from a city competing for the company’s second headquarters if it is located in a state that lacks statewide LGBT-inclusive nondiscrimination protections. Florida is one of the 8 states among 20 finalists that fails to meet the standard.

Equality Florida has issued this statement in response:

We hope Amazon will choose Miami and join our top business leaders urgently calling on the legislature and the Governor to update Florida civil right statutes to ban anti-LGBT discrimination statewide.

Right now 60% of Floridians, including Miami-Dade residents, are protected by local LGBT-inclusive anti-discrimination laws.

Equality Florida has been an active part of the effort to draw 50,000 new jobs and a $5 Billion investment to Florida including being part of a video touting our state.

It is, however, a shame that our state legislature’s failure to pass basic protections statewide may put us at a competitive disadvantage. We urge the legislature and the Governor to take swift action to uphold the values of equality and opportunity. We call on our elected leaders to demonstrate our entire state is open for business for all and move legislation pending before them right now.
