Equality Florida loved Tallahassee Pridefest!

Equality Florida had a wonderful time at Tallahassee Pridefest this weekend! The event kicked off with a volunteer training on Friday in the beautiful Kleman Plaza. Our volunteers heard about Equality Florida’s work and practiced canvassing for the next day. Afterwards, we went to the Girlz Rock event at Mint Lounge where we gathered signatures for the Florida Competitive Workforce Act and got on stage to encourage everyone to call our Senators to vote NO on the Anti Adoption Bill!

Saturday’s event included lots of live music, performances, food trucks, and hundreds of pro-LGBT booths. During the festival, Equality Florida was proud to connect with individuals and local businesses in the area. We had the honor of announcing our work on the stage, to encourage each attendee to engage in the fight for full LGBT equality! By continuing the conversation and momentum surrounding marriage equality and with the help of our stellar volunteers, we collected over 600 pledges in support of full equality and made over 80 phone calls to reject the Anti Adoption Bill!

Martin Gill, the plaintiff in the challenge to Florida’s gay adoption ban in 2010, and his son Nathaniel Gill, stopped by our booth and showed their support for full LGBT equality. They had just flown in from DC and we were happy to share our excitement about the possibility of the freedom to marry coming so soon nationwide!!

The event concluded with a beautiful wedding! One of the couples, Cathy and Amanda, came by to take a photo and share why equal workplace protections are important to them.

Just married!

All around, it was a great weekend. Tallahassee was truly beaming with pride. One of our volunteers, Elliot Jude said it best, “Pride this year had the biggest turnout I’ve ever seen. I enjoyed volunteering because as a transgender male I was able to tell my story and raise awareness for a great cause.” We were happy to engage the North Florida community in the fight for equal protections for all LGBT Floridians. Thank you to the pride organizers and our volunteers for an unforgettable event!
